What functions will the PZ HX Safety Module perform?
The standard PZ HX Safety Module is an integral component for PCCO MONO heat pumps. The wall-mounted version is designed for higher-capacity monoblock air-to-water heat pumps (PCOP range), as well as units from other manufacturers. The role of the module is to protect the heat pump from freezing in the event of power cuts.
Effective protection against freezing
The PZ HX Safety Module, which performs the AntiFreeze function, protects the condenser of the monoblock heat pump for 48 hours in the event of a power failure at -25°C outside. Thus, anti-freeze protection is provided even in the event of the highest classified power outages – long (more than 3 min) and catastrophic ones (more than 24 h). The option of using water instead of glycol significantly reduces investment and operating costs.
AntiFreeze – the only monoblock heat pump solution of its kind on the market
Specifically for monoblock heat pumps, Hewalex has developed the PZ HX Safety Module, which performs the AntiFreeze function. This protects the condenser filled with heating water in the event of a power failure, even over a 48-hour period at an outdoor temperature of -25°C. The ability to operate with water in the system eliminates the need for glycol and an additional heat exchanger and circulation pump. This reduces investment and operating costs. At the same time, it increases the efficiency of the heat pump by up to 15-20% compared to the traditional variant with glycol in the system. In addition to lower costs, the use of water is also an environmental benefit.
Construction of PZ HX Safety Module
The components of the PZ HX022 Safety Module are placed together with the battery in a wall-mounted cabinet. In the PZ HX100 version, the battery is installed separately on the wall bracket provided. An additional function of the PZ HX Safety Module can be the measurement of electricity consumption and the determination of the heating output and COP efficiency of the heat pump. This is possible through the use of temperature sensors, current transformers and a pulse flow meter (optional element – not included in the kit).
General principle of operation of the PZ HX Safety Module
- In standard UPS systems, in the event of a mains power failure, the inverter will automatically discharge the battery within a few hours. The PZ HX Safety Module uses an additional control board, transferring voltage to the inverter only when the heating water flow has to be forced.
- The test programme (daily/monthly) checks that the battery has sufficient capacity, that the electrical system is correctly connected and that the heating water flow is guaranteed (dirty filters, closed valves, defective circulation pump).
- The user receives emergency notifications (SMS/email).
Monitoring of the energy balance as required by RES subsidy programmes
Many subsidy programmes for the purchase of a heat pump require that the amount of heat generated and the electricity consumed is monitored independently of the unit controller. This makes it possible to accurately determine the efficiency of the heating solution used. With a small extension and the use of an impulse flow meter in the heating water circuit, the PZ HX Safety Module also fulfils this role, allowing the property owner to obtain subsidies, for example, for the modernisation of the heating system with a heat pump.

Eliminates the risk of freezing of the water-circulating condenser in the event of mains power cuts for 48 hours at an external temperature of -25°C.
AUTOMATIC TESTS OF OPERATING READINESS
Daily and monthly testing programme, including adequate battery capacity, correct electrical system connection, water flow through condenser.
ADDITIONAL MEASUREMENT CAPACITY
With the optional flow meter, it is possible to measure electricity consumption, determine the heating output and COP efficiency of the heat pump.
AUTOMATIC SMS/EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS
Any alarm condition relating to the protection of the heat pump, as well as to the operation of the module itself – notified to the user or service centre via SMS/email.
REMOTE ONLINE MONITORING
Monitoring of the operation of the PZ HX Safety Module can be carried out remotely thanks to its connection to the EKONTROL monitoring system of Hewalex.
UNIVERSAL APPLICABILITY
The version of the module built into the electrical cabinet can be used for Hewalex heat pumps of higher power, as well as units from other manufacturers (subject to their requirements).

The basic idea of the PZ HX Safety Module is based on the use of two water temperature sensors located in the heat pump condenser feed and return, on the basis of which the circulation pump is activated. Using a pulse flow meter (optional) and current transformers (included in the scope of supply), power, energy generated and consumed over time and COP efficiency are measured.
